Meals on Wheels College Park is celebrating 50 years of fighting food insecurity in the community, but its leaders say it needs more donations and volunteers.

Latinas Leading Tomorrow was one of the local recipients of NBC4, Telemundo 44 and Comcast NBCUniversal’s Local Impact Grants this year. The eight recipients of this year’s NBCU Local Impact Grants serve D.C., Maryland and Virginia, providing services that range from youth empowerment to community engagement.

Aliyah Majeed-Hall, a high school junior, started an organization called One Word Reading Initiative where she gives away high-quality books to children in vulnerable communities. She started the organization after meeting kids at a volunteer literacy program and saw a need for kids to be passionate about reading. News4’s Molette Green reports. 

The foundation is still accepting donations for its annual back-to-school drive-thru giveaway.

Free health screenings, haircuts and healthy cooking demos will be at the center of a health and wellness expo in Southeast D.C. this weekend. It’s happening at Washington View Apartments on Douglass Road SE from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. News4’s Molette Green reports on why it’s important to reach underserved communities. 

NBC4 and Apple Federal Credit Union surprises an Alexandria City High School science teacher with a $1,000 check towards her wish list for the school year at the annual Ready 4 School Backpack Drive. Loudoun Education Foundation’s “Fueled” program helps students in Loudoun County focus on learning by providing them meals every week. The program is searching for more volunteers to deliver food to schools and snack donations. News4’s Molette Green reports.

The event is described as a big food party with a chance to talk about how food brings families together. The Apple Federal Credit Union joins forces with Fairfax County’s Health Department to teach personal finance in the community. The 16-week program called Stable Families, Thriving Futures teaches parents as young as 14 years old up to 25 years old financial literacy. News4’s Molette Green reports.
